Iran FM meets UN Deputy Secy. Gen., discuss dust elimination

Iran’s FM met with UN Deputy Secretary-General the Executive Secretary of the UNESCAP

Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs met with Armida Alis jahbana, the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP)

Hossein Amirabdollahian expressed appreciation for ESCAP Executive Secretary's participation and cooperation in organizing the international summit on dealing with dust in Tehran. Amirabdollahian further emphasized the necessity of regional and international cooperation to eliminate dust production centers in the region and the world and reduce their associated risks 

Iran FM blames transregional powers for dust, sandstorms 

Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs attributed a portion of the sources of dust and sandstorm occurrences in the region to wars imposed by transregional powers, which, solely pursue their own goals without considering significant matters like the environment, and have burdened the people and nature of the region with problems.

Hossein Amirabdollahian regarded climate and weather changes as another factor contributing to the increase in the phenomenon of dust and sandstorms.

He emphasized the readiness of the Islamic Republic of Iran for expanding cooperation with ESCAP (the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) to tackle natural disasters and also the centers of sand and dust storms in the region.

Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), conveyed the UN Secretary General’s greeting to the Iranian top diplomat.

She described areas of ESCAP's cooperation with countries and regional entities during this meeting.

She further underscored the importance of regional coordinated actions to combat the dust and sandstorm phenomenon and declared ESCAP's readiness to support Iran in this regard.

The UN official also appreciated Iran’s assistance to the regional center for the management of disaster-related information affiliated with ESCAP (APDIM) and the excellent hosting provided by the Islamic Republic at its headquarters in Tehran.

She commended the successful organization of the International Summit on Combating Dust and Sandstorms and considered the valuable presence and speech of the Iranian President at the opening ceremony as evidence of the high level of attention of the Islamic Republic of Iran to international and environmental issues
