Iranian Indian FMs discuss bilateral ties regional developments in New York

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met and held talks with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New York on Friday morning as part of his consultations with foreign ministers attending the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The two foreign ministers discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.

Araghchi briefed his Indian counterpart on the latest regional developments and explained the Islamic Republic of Iran’s positions, saying that the United States’ breach of commitments and its aggressive approach toward Iran, including the maritime blockade and attacks on Iranian commercial shipping, are the main cause of insecurity in the region and the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed the international community’s responsibility to hold the aggressors accountable.

The Iranian foreign minister also briefed his Indian counterpart on the latest status of the talks and understanding between Iran and Oman regarding the establishment of a safe route for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the continued efforts by mediators to convey the conditions and essential elements required for a return to the diplomatic process.

The foreign ministers of Iran and India reviewed developments in their neighborhood and stressed the importance of using all available capacities to improve security and prevent an escalation of tensions in the region.

They also exchanged views on following up on the implementation of the two countries’ understandings in various economic and trade fields, as well as strengthening consultations at senior levels.
