Iran foreign minister meets with Iraqi PM in Baghdad
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Wednesday held talks with Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammad al-Sudani as he continued his visit to Iraq.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Wednesday held talks with Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammad al-Sudani as he continued his visit to Iraq.
In the meeting, Amirabdollahian discussed important issues of mutual interest as well as regional and international matters with the Iraqi prime minister.
The Iranian foreign minister underlined the need for Iraq to pay back its debts to Iran. Amirabdollahian also called on Baghdad to protect and control the border between the two countries and exercise its sovereignty over the Iraqi territory in order to prevent any threatening moves against Iran. The top Iranian diplomat further stressed the necessity of strengthening transportation routes, holding the next session of the joint high commission of Iran and Iraq, and finalizing the comprehensive cooperation document between the two neighbors.
The Iraqi prime minister for his part appreciated Iran’s permanent support for Iraq and said Baghdad is ready to implement the agreements signed during his visit to Tehran.
Sudani added that Iraq will continue playing its role in maintaining regional peace and helping to strengthen dialogue during regional developments.
