Iranian Foreign Minister holds telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General

..

Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, held a telephone conversation on Thursday.

During this telephone conversation, the two sides discussed and exchanged views on the latest situation in the region and the security and humanitarian consequences of the US

and Zionist regime military aggression against Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Minister briefed the UN Secretary-General on the latest developments and the crimes committed by the United States and the Zionist regime.

Araghchi emphasized Iran’s firm resolve and determination to continue legitimate defense of its national security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Referring to the brutal attacks by the United States and the Zionist regime against civilian targets, including schools, hospitals, cultural and historical sites, public places, and residential areas, the Iranian Foreign Minister highlighted the responsibility of the United Nations and the Secretary-General personally to pursue the egregious violations of the UN Charter and international law—including human rights and international humanitarian law—by the aggressors.

Criticizing the one-sided stances and demands made by some parties on Iran to exercise restraint and stop the war, Araghchi stressed: “This obvious fact must not be overlooked: it was the United States, together with the Zionist regime, that once again betrayed diplomacy, jeopardized the security and interests of all countries in the region, and committed military aggression against Iran, thus imposing war on the region and the world.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister described the existing insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz as a direct consequence of the lawbreaking and aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime, and stated: “Preventing the passage of vessels owned by or affiliated with the enemy and its allies is the legitimate right of Iran as a littoral state, and the competent authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, being fully aware of their responsibilities to ensure maritime security and safety in this waterway, have taken the necessary measures.”

The Iranian Foreign Minister also called for serious action and firm, unequivocal positions by the United Nations in fulfilling its inherent responsibility to safeguard international peace and security—by condemning the aggressors and utilizing the Organization’s capacity and that of independent states to hold them accountable.

The UN Secretary-General, underscoring the principled position of the United Nations regarding the necessity of respecting the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, expressed the Organization’s profound concern over the continuation of war and bloodshed in the region.

António Guterres announced the appointment of Mr. Jean Arnault as the SecretaryGeneral’s Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, stating that the purpose of the appointment is to engage directly with Iranian officials and consult with the Islamic Republic of Iran to help resolve the crisis.
