Iranian foreign minister meets with UN official for assessment of Afghan affairs

Amirabdollahian said the formation of an inclusive government and the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan were important, and emphasized the need to support regional initiatives, especially within the neighbors’ framework, to help resolve the challenges of Afghanistan.

 

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, in a Sunday meeting with Feridun Sinirlioglu, the special coordinator of the United Nations secretary-general for the independent assessment of Afghanistan affairs, expressed pleasure with Sinirlioglu’s appointment to the position. Amirabdollahian also announced the readiness of the Islamic Republic of Iran to advance regional initiatives with the central role of the United Nations on the issue of Afghanistan.

Amirabdollahian said the formation of an inclusive government and the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan were important, and emphasized the need to support regional initiatives, especially within the neighbors’ framework, to help resolve the challenges of Afghanistan.

The Iranian foreign minister said, “Afghanistan needs urgent solutions and if the international community does not pay serious attention to the security challenges of this country caused by the movements of terrorist groups, its negative consequences will affect the region and the world.”

Amirabdollahian described Sinirlioglu’s mission as difficult under the current circumstances and expressed hope that due to his useful experience and professional background, he would have a more accurate assessment of the realities of Afghanistan and that this mission would be completed successfully.

Sinirlioglu also in turn expressed  satisfaction with the opportunity to exchange views and hold talks with the Iranian foreign minister.

He presented his assessment of the developments and situation of Afghanistan in various political and security dimensions, expressing the resolve of the United Nations to support regional initiatives and the neighbors’ framework to help form an inclusive government in the country.
