Iranian FM spokesperson clarifies Iran’s stance regarding referendum on annexation of four regions in Ukraine to Russia

The Spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nasser Kanaani, in response to journalists’ question regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran’s position on holding a referandum in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions in Ukraine and the annexation of the regions to Russia, emphasized, “The Islamic Republic of Iran, as always and based on its principled positions, emphasizes the necessity of fully observing the principle of territorial integrity of countries as a fundamental rule of international law and respecting the principles and goals of the United Nations Charter.”

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs further stated, “The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that any provocative act that can disrupt the path to peace, stability and tranquility should be avoided.”

Kanaani added, “Unfortunately, the ravaging fire of the war in Ukraine, which was caused by the provocative moves by the NATO and spearheaded by the United States, is still raging and the efforts made to reduce the tension and conflict have not yielded any results due to the actions of some involved parties who follow their interests in the continuation of crisis and tension.”

In the end, the spokesperson of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized, “The Islamic Republic of Iran supports any efforts that are made for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine and has always declared its readiness to help this process.”
