Iranian FM meets UN General Assembly President

Seyed Abbas Araghchi Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran who has traveled to New York to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly met and held talks with Mr. Khalil-ur-Rehman President of the UN General Assembly at noon on Saturday.

During the meeting, the Foreign Minister congratulated Mr. Khalil-ur-Rehman on his election as President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and stressed the importance of the General Assembly Presidency playing an active role in safeguarding the principles and purposes of the UN Charter. He also expressed confidence that Khalil-ur-Rehman’s presidency of the General Assembly, unlike that of his predecessor, whose tenure was marked by harmful bias and politicization in the activities of the Presidency, would be based on a professional, balanced and responsible approach.

Referring to the main theme of the 81st session of the General Assembly, “Rebuilding Trust in the United Nations,” the Foreign Minister noted that restoring trust in the United Nations above all requires ending gross violations of the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, particularly the principle of respect for the national sovereignty of states and the prohibition of the use of force set out in Article 2 of the Charter; preventing the instrumental use of the Security Council; and ending impunity for the perpetrators and those behind grave international crimes, particularly aggression, genocide and war crimes committed by the Zionist regime.

The Foreign Minister briefed the President of the General Assembly on developments related to peace and security in the West Asia region following the military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran. He stressed that the US-Israeli military aggression, which began on March 1, 2026, while nuclear negotiations were underway, and has continued to date in various forms, including a maritime blockade and economic sanctions, has no rationale other than bullying and the use of force. He added that the prevailing insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz is also a result of these aggressive and interventionist actions.

Mr. Khalil-ur-Rehman, for his part, expressed pleasure at meeting with the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran and reaffirmed his commitment to engaging professionally with all UN member states in carrying out the responsibilities of the General Assembly.
