Antonio Tajani, Italy’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, held a telephone conversation on Thursday afternoon with Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

During the call, the Italian Foreign Minister firmly rejected recent remarks of the NATO Secretary General regarding the use of Italian military bases by the United States in military operations against Iran.

Tajani further emphasized that no Italian military base had been used for an attack against Iran and that no such action would be done in the future. He stated that U.S. aircraft had not taken off from Italian territory to carry out bombardments against Iran and that the Italian government had never granted authorization for any such operation.

For his part, Iran’s Foreign Minister expressed appreciation for the telephone call and the clarification provided by his Italian counterpart, while stressing the need for an explicit and official denial of these statements by the Italian government.
