Iranian FM UN chief hold phone talks on regional tensions NPT review conference

Seyed Abbas Araghchi Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran and António Guterres Secretary-General of the United Nations spoke by telephone on Friday evening.

Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, spoke by telephone on Friday evening.

During this telephone conversation, the two sides exchanged views on regional and international developments, particularly the situation in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Iran's Foreign Minister, while explaining the latest status of the ongoing diplomatic process aimed at ending the imposed war against the Islamic Republic of Iran, cited the United States' record of bad faith – especially its repeated breaches of diplomacy, military aggression against Iran, along with its contradictory stances and excessive demands – as factors disrupting the negotiation process mediated by Pakistan.

He further stated: "Despite deep mistrust toward the United States, the Islamic Republic of Iran has entered this diplomatic process with a responsible approach and in complete seriousness, and is striving to achieve a reasonable and fair outcome."

During this telephone call, the two sides also discussed topics related to the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), currently underway in New York.

The UN Secretary-General, rejecting the use of force against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, emphasized the necessity of adhering to the principles of the UN Charter and utilizing diplomatic means to establish peace and stability in the region.
