Iranian foreign minister writes letter to counterparts to underline shared global responsibility to censure illegal US conduct against Iran

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi in a letter addressed to his counterparts from several other countries described the recent threats made by the US president against the Islamic Republic of Iran as a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter and called on all parties to explicitly and firmly condemn these provocative statements.

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, in a letter addressed to his counterparts from several other countries, described the recent threats made by the US president against the Islamic Republic of Iran as a flagrant violation of international law and the UN Charter, and called on all parties to explicitly and firmly condemn these provocative statements.

In this letter, referring to the statements made by the US president on December 29, the foreign minister emphasized that the threat to use force against Iran constitutes a clear violation of the UN Charter, which prohibits any threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of states.

Recalling the joint military assault by the US and the Israeli regime against Iran in June 2025, he stressed that the recent threats reflect the United States’ evident ill intent in pursuing the continuation of an unlawful and aggressive course of action, the consequences and repercussions of which will rest with the US.

Araghchi also cited the official acknowledgment by the US president of his country’s direct role in the June attacks against Iranian citizens, critical infrastructure, and Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, noting that such actions constitute a clear and serious violation of international law and entail individual criminal responsibility for the relevant US officials.

In another part of the letter, he described the threat against a UN member state by the US president in support of the Israeli regime as a manifestation of double standards and a serious undermining of the non-proliferation regime, emphasizing that the unconditional support by the US for the Israeli regime, as the sole possessor of nuclear weapons in West Asia, has gravely endangered regional and international security.

Warning of the dangerous consequences of silence in the face of such threats and unlawful actions, the foreign minister underlined that creating an atmosphere of impunity has emboldened the US and the Israeli regime to continue their aggressive behavior and constitutes a direct threat to global peace and security.

In conclusion, while emphasizing the inherent and undeniable right of the Islamic Republic of Iran to self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, Araghchi stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to deliver a firm and deterrent response to any act of aggression.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has also, in two other separate letters to the UN secretary general and the president of the UN Security Council, as well as the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has conveyed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s strong protest against the provocative statements and illegal threats of the US president.
