Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Anniversary of the Zionist Regimes Crime in Attacking the Iranian Embassy in Damascus

.

One year ago, on April 2, 2024 (13 Farvardin 1403 in the Persian calendar), the criminal Zionist regime, in a flagrant violation of the most fundamental principles and norms of international law, attacked the building of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Embassy in Damascus. This assault resulted in the martyrdom and injury of several Iranian citizens and anti-terrorism military advisors, as well as several Syrian citizens.

The Zionist regime’s military-terrorist aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Embassy was a clear violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter, particularly the prohibition on the use of force, and a gross breach of international legal norms and standards, notably the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the 1973 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Internationally Protected Persons.

Despite the condemnation of the Zionist regime’s aggression against Iran’s embassy building in Damascus by many governments, the United Nations Security Council, continuing its inaction regarding the regime’s persistent law-breaking and crimes in occupied Palestine and Lebanon, failed to fulfill its inherent responsibilities under the UN Charter. Under the destructive influence of the United States, it was unable even to issue a brief statement condemning the Zionist regime’s military attack—an act that undoubtedly constituted aggression and a clear violation of international peace and security. In such circumstances, Operation True Promise 1 was designed and executed as part of Iran’s inherent right to legitimate self-defense against the Zionist regime’s blatant aggression.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the continued inaction of the UN Security Council in the face of the Zionist apartheid regime’s persistent and countless violations of law—reflecting the comprehensive support of the United States, the United Kingdom, and some other Western governments for the regime’s genocide, occupation, and warmongering in occupied Palestine and the surrounding region, particularly Lebanon and Syria—has been a major factor in emboldening the Zionist regime to persist in its gross violations of the fundamental principles and norms of international law, human rights, and humanitarian law.

The ongoing impunity of the Zionist regime and the United States’ blatant obstruction of the duties of international legal and criminal courts to hold the regime’s leaders accountable and punish them for committing genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the crime of aggression not only contradict all accepted legal-international principles and ethical norms but also pave the way for the continuation of lawlessness and threats to international peace and security by this regime.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, while honoring the memory of the proud martyrs—Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi, and martyrs Hossein Amanollahi, Seyed Mehdi Jalalati, Mohsen Sedaghat, Ali Agha Babaei, and Seyed Ali Salehi Roozbehani—emphasizes that the passage of time will in no way lead to the forgetting of this crime or the other criminal actions of this regime against the Iranian nation and the nations of the region. The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to utilize all its capacities to ensure justice and hold the terrorist Israeli regime accountable
