During an address at the 6th Ministerial Meeting of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi strongly criticized the UN Security Council for its inaction over the crimes of the Israeli regime. Gharibabadi called for immediate action by the international community and the imposition of effective sanctions on the regime.

He referred to the disastrous situation in Palestine, which is getting worse by the moment, adding that the Security Council has not been able to stop the killing machine of the Zionist regime because of the unconditional support of the US for the Israeli regime.

The senior Iranian diplomat noted that the US, with its boundless aid, is involved in Israel’s crimes and, along with the Zionist regime, is responsible for the violations of international law by Tel Aviv and for the lost lives.

Gharibabadi then spoke about the provocations of the Zionists, warning that self-restraint against these provocations is not limitless particularly when the Israeli regime is trying to broaden its aggression into Lebanon, which will push the region to an irreversible escalation of tensions. Such provocations and atrocities by the Zionists cannot weaken “our collective resolve to stop this regime”.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs called for the restoration of the rule of law and the implementation of justice, noting that the time has come for the rule of law to be established and justice to be administered. The UN Security Council should impose effective sanctions on the Israeli regime under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter. "All countries should refrain from giving any aid to or engaging in economic interactions with this regime to help stop its genocidal war and end the occupation”.

Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs underlined the importance of respecting the UN Charter and opposing unilateral actions, saying, "We value the efforts of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations to maintain the high status of the Charter. Unilateral measures, especially unilateral sanctions, aim to violate the sovereign rights of nations and should be responded to effectively and proportionately”.

Gharibabadi underscored the need for greater cooperation and coordination in dealing with unilateral coercive measures and stated that all countries must adopt common positions at the UN and support the existing proposals to deal with such coercive measures.
