Today (Thursday), after meeting my Iraqi counterpart Mr. Fuad Hussein, I attended a joint press conference with him and outlined our consultations.
-Next week, Iran’s minister of roads and urban development will travel to Baghdad and we are determined to launch the Shalamcheh-Basra railway as soon as possible. This will help the travels of the nationals of both sides and transit and exchange of goods between Iran and Iraq.
-We also held talks over waiving general visas for citizens of the two countries. Following the air visa abolition, in Iran we are ready to waive general visas. All preparations have been made for this purpose. The Iraqi foreign minister and relevant authorities in his entourage are supposed to pursue the matter carefully.
-We also discussed the situation in Afghanistan. We held talks over the latest state of fighting terrorism and Daesh in Iraq and Syria plus the state of the nuclear talks between Iran and the P4+1 group in Vienna. We are in touch with Mr. Foreign Minister and other high-ranking Iraqi officials regarding the nuclear talks.
-Thanks to efforts by Mr. Fuad Hussein and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, we will attend the next round of talks with Saudi Arabia in Baghdad. I would like to thank the admirable efforts of the Iraqi government to help dispel misunderstandings and normalize the Iranian-Saudi ties.
-The Iran-Iraq ties are interconnected in all areas and are dynamic and vibrant. The number of pilgrims on both sides visiting Iran and Iraq per annum is more than 4 million and this is a wonderful figure in bilateral ties. Overall, relations in all areas are good. The Tehran-Baghdad ties are strategic in the real sense of the word at all levels.
