Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who is in Baghdad to attend the 52nd Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), met and held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Saturday evening. During the meeting, the Iranian foreign minister expressed appreciation to the Iraqi government and people for their excellent hosting of the session, stressing the importance of making greater use of the OIC’s capacities to pursue issues concerning the Muslim world, particularly the issue of Palestine and the expansionism and warmongering of the Zionist regime. Referring to the very good relations between the two neighboring Muslim countries, Araghchi reaffirmed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s determination to further strengthen relations with Iraq in all areas of mutual interest. The two sides also discussed and reviewed the latest regional developments. Explaining Iran’s positions and views on peace and stability in West Asia, Araghchi stressed that the root cause of insecurity in the region is the occupation and expansionism of the Zionist regime, which, particularly over the past three years, has carried out military aggression against Lebanon, Syria, and Iran while committing genocide in Palestine, jeopardizing global peace and security. Highlighting Iran’s commitment to using diplomacy to prevent further escalation of insecurity, Araghchi recalled that it was the United States that repeatedly disrupted diplomatic processes by violating its commitments and resorting to force, thereby undermining the security of international commercial shipping. The Iranian foreign minister and the Iraqi prime minister also discussed the Saudi Arabia–Yemen conflict, ways to help end the naval blockade of Yemen, and efforts to de-escalate tensions.
