Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who is in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, met with Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the final day of his trip. During the meeting, the Foreign Minister outlined the latest developments in the West Asia region following the US and Israeli regime’s military aggression against Iran, stressing that the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a founding member of the United Nations, has expected and continues to expect the Organization and its member states not to remain indifferent to the violation of law and gross breaches of the Charter by a permanent member of the Security Council, and to explicitly condemn the continuation of the United States’ unlawful interventionist measures and threats. Referring to the two rounds of unlawful US and Israeli attacks against Iran in the midst of negotiations within less than one year, as well as the continuation of acts of aggression in the form of a naval blockade and economic terrorism, the Foreign Minister stressed Iran’s determination to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity with all its capabilities. He stated that the Iranian nation will never abandon its demand for justice and for the prosecution and punishment of those who ordered and perpetrated the war crimes committed by the United States and the Israeli regime. Recalling Iran’s responsible approach toward international peace and security, Araghchi noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran has always remained steadfast in its commitment to using diplomacy as a means of safeguarding its national interests and ensuring peace in the region. However, he said, the United States has repeatedly betrayed diplomacy over the past decade and, by violating its commitments, has contributed to insecurity in the region. Araghchi also referred to the continuation of the Israeli regime’s genocide and warmongering in the occupied Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria and other countries in the region, and recalled the responsibility of the United Nations and the Security Council to end Israel’s impunity and halt the crimes being committed in Gaza and the West Bank. The UN Secretary-General, condemning violations of the fundamental principles of the Charter, particularly the use of force by superpowers, stressed the need for all countries to abide by the principles and rules of international law and to use diplomacy to resolve issues. The meeting also addressed the continued gross violations by the United States of the Host Country Agreement and its obstruction of the normal activities of Iran’s Mission. Iran’s protest over the performance of the host government in this regard was conveyed to the Secretary-General, who was urged to take the necessary measures to compel the US government to fulfill its obligations.
