Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who has traveled to New York to attend the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, met and held talks with Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, on Saturday evening. During the meeting, regional and international developments, the humanitarian assistance situation in crisis-hit areas, and areas of cooperation between Iran and relevant UN bodies were reviewed. The Iranian foreign minister, referring to Iran’s long-standing hosting of Afghan refugees despite the US economic war and unjust sanctions, highlighted the responsibility of international humanitarian organizations in this regard. Araghchi also referred to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the West Bank resulting from the genocide and crimes committed by the Israeli regime, as well as the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people in Lebanon due to Israel’s ongoing attacks, stressing the need for greater attention by the United Nations and international humanitarian organizations to these situations. Araghchi recalled that addressing humanitarian crises and disasters in a fundamental manner requires tackling the causes and factors that give rise to them. The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, for his part, outlined the most important humanitarian situations around the world and stressed the continuation of UN efforts to fulfill its humanitarian responsibilities.
