Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, continuing his consultations with his counterparts attending the United Nations General Assembly session, met and held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday afternoon.During the meeting, the two sides discussed the state of bilateral cooperation in various fields, including political, economic, trade, transportation and energy affairs, as well as coordination at the level of international organizations.The Iranian foreign minister praised Russia’s responsible positions in opposing the United States’ aggressive unilateralism and its misuse of international organizations to exert pressure on independent countries.The Iranian and Russian foreign ministers also exchanged views on developments in West Asia following the United States’ repeated breaches of its commitments and its violation of the provisions of the Islamabad understanding.The Iranian foreign minister briefed his Russian counterpart on the latest status of the talks and understanding between Iran and Oman regarding the establishment of a safe maritime route through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the continued efforts by mediators to convey the conditions and essential elements required for a return to the diplomatic process.Araghchi described the current insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz as a direct result of the United States’ failure to honor its commitments and its crimes against Iran. Recalling Iran’s goodwill throughout the negotiations that led to the understanding to end the war, he stressed that, just as the Islamic Republic of Iran demonstrated seriousness in the diplomatic arena, it remains determined to defend its national interests and security and prevent the United States from misusing the Strait of Hormuz to threaten Iran’s national security.The Russian foreign minister, reiterating his country’s principled position in condemning the US and Israeli military aggression against Iran and the efforts by the United States and its allies to instrumentally misuse international organizations to advance their objectives, stressed the importance of all countries adhering to international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.
