Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a telephone conversation on Wednesday afternoon to exchange views on issues of mutual interest. During the talks, Araghchi briefed his Chinese counterpart on the details of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and expressed hope that Iran and China would be able to take advantage of the opportunities created by the agreement to further expand bilateral relations, particularly in the energy and economic sectors. Referring to the high level of mutual trust between the Islamic Republic of Iran and China and the strategic importance of relations between the two countries, the Iranian foreign minister also thanked Beijing for its support for the negotiation process and its backing of the memorandum. Araghchi further pointed to past experiences that have led to deep mistrust in Iran toward the United States, stressing that “the responsibility for the full and proper implementation of the provisions of this memorandum, particularly with regard to ending the war on all fronts, rests with the United States.” For his part, the Chinese foreign minister welcomed the memorandum and commended the Iranian government and people for their steadfastness in the face of pressure and coercive policies. He also praised the Islamic Republic of Iran’s responsible and diplomatic approach toward resolving issues and advancing dialogue. Wang Yi emphasized the importance of the precise and complete implementation of the memorandum and expressed China’s readiness to cooperate in facilitating its implementation, strengthening regional engagement, and helping address existing ambiguities and challenges among countries in the region. The foreign ministers of Iran and China also underscored the need for international support for the memorandum and highlighted the responsibility of the United Nations Security Council, as the primary body entrusted with maintaining international peace and security, to support its effective implementation and ensure adherence to its provisions. The two sides also reviewed a number of bilateral issues and expressed hope that the opportunities created by the memorandum would open a new chapter in Iran-China relations.
