Iranian deputy FM: Iran, Serbia can rely on shared experience to promote peace, stability

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Bagheri, who is on a visit to Serbia, met with Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selaković on Thursday. The two sides discussed the latest developments in bilateral, regional and international relations during the meeting. Referring to the common experiences of Iran and Serbia in facing sanctions and also their shared views on many international issues and developments, the Iranian political deputy foreign minister stated, “Iran and Serbia should rely on their shared views on issues in the international community and turn to joint action in the international arena and work synergistically with the cooperation of other independent countries to promote regional and global peace and stability.” The Iranian deputy foreign minister also referred to the meeting of the presidents of the two countries on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and emphasized on the development of their relations in all aspects. Bagheri stated Serbia’s strategic approach to regional and international issues is a valuable asset for strengthening Iran-Serbia relations and added, “The scope of relations between the two countries includes various dimensions such as political, economic, military, cultural and scientific fields.” The political deputy of the Iranian foreign minister also said, “We hope to see the exchange of high-ranking delegations between the two countries in the near future, such as a visit by the Iranian foreign minister to Serbia and a visit by the Serbian president to Iran.” Meanwhile, the Serbian foreign minister shed light on Serbia’s regional and international policies and emphasized on developing relations between the two countries in all fields. At the end of the meeting, the two sides condemned the United States’ and the West’s double standards in implementing the international law and using sanctions against other countries, emphasizing that Iran and Serbia do not support the policy of unilateral sanctions against any country because the policy is against the basic principles of international law and against the interests of nations. Also on Thursday, the Iranian deputy foreign minister held separate meetings with the head of the Serbian president’s office as well as the head of Serbia’s Intelligence and Security Agency. Furthermore, Bagheri visited the Institute of European Studies and held a friendly conversation with a number of researchers.
