Iran FM holds phone call with new OIC Secretary-General

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation on Monday with Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the newly appointed Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The Foreign Minister congratulated Ould Cheikh Ahmed on his election as OIC Secretary-General and wished him success in his new position. Araghchi expressed hope that, by drawing on the organization’s capacities, the new Secretary-General would play a role in strengthening the unity and coordination of Islamic countries in addressing developments and challenges facing the Muslim world.

During the call, Araghchi briefed the OIC Secretary-General on the latest regional developments following the US and Israeli regime’s aggression against Iran, stressing the need for responsible action by Islamic countries in response to violations of Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the need to counter the use of force and aggression.

The Foreign Minister also referred to the critical circumstances and challenges facing the Muslim world, particularly the continuation of the Israeli regime’s aggression and crimes in Palestine and Lebanon. He stressed the need for firm support for the rights of the Palestinian and Lebanese peoples and for Islamic countries to adopt united and effective positions on these developments.

Araghchi also invited the new OIC Secretary-General to visit Tehran and expressed hope that the visit would take place at the earliest appropriate opportunity.
