ICRC President Meets with Iran’s Foreign Minister in Geneva

Ms. Mirjana Spoljaric President of the International Committee of the Red Cross met on Monday afternoon with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi who is in Geneva for diplomatic consultations and to participate in Iran–US nuclear talks.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed developments related to international humanitarian law as well as cooperation between Iran and the International Committee of the Red Cross on issues within the mandate of the organization.

 

The Iranian Foreign Minister underscored the need for all governments to uphold the principles and norms of international humanitarian law and stressed the responsibility of the international community to confront the continued grave violations of humanitarian law in West Asia by the Zionist regime.

 

Referring to the blatant violations of international humanitarian law and the killing of Iranian citizens during the military aggression by the Zionist regime and the United States against Iran, as well as the targeting of Iran's civilian sites and national infrastructure, Araghchi emphasized the responsibility of the United Nations and other relevant international bodies, including the ICRC, to adopt a clear position on the matter.

 

For her part, the ICRC President recalled the organization’s role and defined mandate within the framework of international humanitarian law and expressed readiness to enhance cooperation with Iran, including through the Iranian Red Crescent Society. She also stressed the importance of all countries strengthening their commitment to international humanitarian law.
