Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baqaei has welcomed the adoption of a UN General Assembly resolution condemning US economic sanctions against Cuba and strongly denounced the continued illegal and inhumane measures imposed by Washington on the Republic of Cuba.
Baqaei stressed that the US’s harsh sanctions against Cuba, which have targeted the fundamental rights of the Cuban people and the country’s development for more than six decades, not only constitute a blatant violation of the principles of the UN Charter and international law but, due to their impact on the Cuban people’s enjoyment of basic human rights, amount to crimes against humanity.
He reaffirmed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s solidarity with the Cuban government and people against US intimidation and pressure policies, noting that the overwhelming support of the majority of countries for the UN General Assembly resolution clearly demonstrates the international community’s opposition to US bullying and lawbreaking.
He further noted that the harm and damage caused to Cuba by the US’s illegal sanctions create international responsibility for Washington, which must be held accountable for these criminal actions.
