Iran FM meets with Afghan acting national defense minister

Seyyed Abbas Araghchi Iran’s Foreign Minister who is visiting Kabul for talks with officials of Afghanistan’s interim government met with Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahid the Acting Minister of National Defense.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed Afghanistan-Iran relations, particularly in the defense and security sectors.

The Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized the interconnected nature of neighboring countries’ security and highlighted the importance of enhancing cooperation between the relevant authorities of the two countries to maintain and strengthen security along their shared borders.

Araghchi also reviewed certain existing concerns and challenges, including drug trafficking, terrorism, and unauthorized border crossings. He stressed that effectively addressing these issues requires close cooperation and coordination between the relevant agencies of both nations.

The Acting Minister of National Defense of Afghanistan, in turn, expressed gratitude for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s positive approach toward the Afghan people, including Iran’s warm hospitality toward millions of Afghan refugees over the past 46 years. He described Afghanistan’s good and cordial relationship with Iran as highly valuable.

He further noted the interim government’s ongoing efforts to combat insecurity and terrorism, calling for greater exchange of information and coordination to prevent and address these pressing threats.

Regarding border security, the acting Afghan Defense Minister emphasized his ministry’s commitment to strengthening border security, through various means including improving the professional capabilities of Afghanistan’s border forces, modernizing border markers, and enhancing cooperation with the Islamic republic of Iran’s border authorities.
