Foreign ministry spokesman reacts to the new anti-Iran sanctions imposed by Council of the European Union and Britain

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has strongly denounced the imposition of fresh sanctions on Iran by the Council of the European Union and the British government over the baseless and unsubstantiated claim that Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were used in the Ukraine war.

He also vehemently rejected similar allegations in a joint statement by Germany, France and the UK.

“We reject groundless claims that drones were supplied [by Iran] to be used in the Ukraine war,” said Kanani.

“We have always stressed that all UN members should fully abide by the objectives and principles of the UN Charter and international law, namely the independence and territorial integrity of countries. We support peace and an immediate end to the war in Ukraine through a political process,” Kanaani noted.

“Continuing their irresponsible, destructive and illegal moves in order to create a poisonous political atmosphere against the Islamic Republic of Iran, the above-said parties seek to present a misleading interpretation of Resolution 2231 of the United Nations Security Council and establish a link between their unfounded allegations and the resolution. This comes as issues pertaining to the current war in Ukraine are completely unrelated to the resolution 2231 both in terms of subject and content,” he said.

He then expounded on the European sides’ chicanery, saying, “The Iranian nation will never forget that some European countries which make claims against Iran are accessories to the crimes committed by Saddam Hussein as they sent him weapons of mass destruction, including chemical arms, during the Iraqi imposed war against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Kanaani said.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran still considers those countries complicit in Saddam Hussein’s crimes and, hence, holds them responsible and accountable,” he said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran regards the current provocative approaches by the European Union and Britain as part of a targeted political scenario which is in contrast to their absurd and hypocritical claims of helping establish lasting peace and stability in the world,” Kanaani noted.

The spokesman for the foreign ministry dismissed EU actions over the past few days as destructive, saying the Islamic Republic of Iran reserves the right to respond to any irresponsible move in order to safeguard national interests and ensure Iranian people’s inalienable rights, and will not hesitate to defend the Iranian nation’s interests.
