UN chief’s special envoy for Syria speaks with Iranian FM’s special envoy for Syria
The UN secretary general’s special envoy for Syria Geir Pederson on Monday held an online video conversation with the Iranian foreign minister’s special envoy for Syria Mohammadreza Raouf Sheibani.
The UN secretary general’s special envoy for Syria Geir Pederson on Monday held an online video conversation with the Iranian foreign minister’s special envoy for Syria Mohammadreza Raouf Sheibani.During the conversation, the two sides discussed the latest political and field developments in Syria, especially efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the country as well as the Zionist regime’s acts of aggression against Syria and its occupation of parts of Syrian soil in addition to the Golan Heights. Other issues discussed were the danger of the recurrence of terrorism and violent extremism and their regional ramifications as well as the situation of minorities and displaced people in Syria. The special envoy of the Iranian foreign minister highlighted the ongoing aggression against Syria by the Zionist regime as well as the violations of minorities’ rights and the rights of some ethnic groups by certain armed factions in the country. Raouf Sheibani also addressed the plight of refugees displaced by the current crisis, calling on the United Nations to pay special attention to the situation in Syria. The Iranian official stressed the necessity of respecting Syria's territorial integrity and sovereignty, urging all regional and international sides to refrain from destructive and illegal interventions in the country's internal affairs. He asserted that the future of Syria should be determined only by the Syrian people themselves. Geir Pederson also presented  a report on the UN's efforts to help resolve various problems in Syria.
