Aide to Azerbaijani president meets with Iranian FM

Khalaf Khalafov, a special aide to the president of Azerbaijan, met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Monday evening.

 

Araghchi stressed the importance of strengthening relations between the neighboring countries of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, saying the Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to develop and expand comprehensive relations with Azerbaijan and to remove any obstacles in this process.

 

Referring to the strategic importance of peace and stability in the South Caucasus region for Iran and the wider region, the Iranian foreign minister reiterated Iran’s principled position on the necessity of respecting the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of countries, preventing geopolitical changes, and relying on diplomacy to resolve disputes. Araghchi voiced hope that, with the signing of a peace agreement between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan, peace and security in the region would be strengthened.

 

Khalafov for his part described his meetings and negotiations with Iranian officials as positive and constructive. He also pointed to the successful visit of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to Baku and underlined his country’s serious determination to further expand and deepen relations with Iran across various fields. Khalafov said holding the Joint Economic  Commissio and the Political Consultations Committee, especially the follow-up and completion of certain joint projects in transportation, electricity, and communications, are important items on the agenda of bilateral relations.
